Flaming is the act of posting hostile, insulting, or offensive messages online. These messages, known as "flames," often target people rather than their opinions or ideas. Flaming can occur in discussion forums, social media comments, group chats, and online games. It can turn a productive conversation into a personal argument.

Flaming often occurs when someone responds to a disagreement with insults or deliberately provokes others. For example, in a discussion comparing iOS and Android, one participant might mock people who prefer the other platform instead of discussing advantages of their preferred operating system. If others respond with similar insults, the exchange can escalate into a "flame war."

Not all online debates begin with hostility. Sarcasm, jokes, and blunt comments can be misinterpreted because written messages lack vocal cues and facial expressions. While emojis can soften the tone, they may not prevent hostile replies. Some users deliberately post inflammatory comments to provoke angry reactions, a tactic often used by online trolls.
